Horizon Disruption Orb

In the year 2781 TSC aboard the Federation space colony Hanley 17-A, a riot broke out in response to the Federation's recent involvement in a war that took place on the planet the station was orbiting. A dispute involving militants was crushed by the force sent to deal with it but in the process there were many civilian casualties as well the destruction of the primary orbital launch facility during the final battle. The riots were due mainly as a result of the sudden shortage of food being brought to the station, rationing of all goods endured for several months with little support coming from the Federation to fix the problem.

Security forces on Hanley 17-A were quickly overwhelmed by the mobs and ended up cornered behind a makeshift barricade. Rather than leaving the situation as it was to make a point, the residents attempted to rush the security forces. With nowhere left to run the guards were forced to open fire, killing over 40 residents and wounding another 60 before they began to retreat. The incident became known as the Hanley Massacre and it illustrated the need for a more appropriate means to deal with unarmed subjects in a non-lethal way.

Enter Horizon Corporation, known for their often exotic and unusual designs in weaponry. From the start they set out to create something small and compact that would instantly render a person immobilized without harming them in the process. The disruption orb that was finally developed is a wondrously simple and easy to use design and its effectiveness is remarkable as well.

Activated with the push of a small button on the surface of the 2cm sphere, a person can hurl or even used specialized launchers to lob the disruption orb at an individual. Either upon impact or proximity detection the sphere will fire out tiny harpoons in a 360 degree field extending out 1 meter. Milliseconds later a powerful jolt of electrical energy is sent out in rapid pulse that will instantly shut down a individual's motor control. A continuous lower energy pulse continues afterward to make sure the target cannot get up until the orb is shut off or its 30 minute power supply runs out. This has given a rather interesting nickname to the disruptor orb as many who have come across them refer to the device as "shock rocks."

With use becoming wide-spread in Terran space there have been over 90,000 documented cases of the disruptor orb being used and only 2 reported deaths attributed to the device have led it to become the premier non-lethal deterrent. A larger version has even been created, measuring 8cm across. The effective area they can stun someone in is nearly 10 meters in radius, a perfect solution for large crowds of people.
