Frigates

Frigates are the main workhorse of the Terran military fleet. They have the range to go anywhere and the armor and firepower to survive just about anything. While often overlooked by many when compared to larger destroyers, cruisers and battleships, the frigates of the Terran military comprise most of the military power.

The advantage of the frigate class vessels is that they offer a huge level of armor and power in a small package. Their speed and maneuverability is surprising and this allows groups of frigates to quickly flank larger ships or avoid them altogether should the situation turn sour. Often times because of their speed they are used as pursuit ships if an enemy vessel attempts to escape.

As far as enlisted personnel go, it should be noted that the crews of frigates comprise the majority of positions in the Federation and Protectorate. Every crew member aboard a destroyer, cruiser or battleship had at one point served on a frigate at some point in their career. The Terran military does not waste resources and the loss of a large fleet ship due to an unprepared crew is not something they would ever risk. Because of the larger crews serving aboard a frigate the ship will remain on station for weeks at a time before shore leave is given, though there are very few complaints over this given the exceptional pay.

Flight Groups

Frigates are large enough that they are given individual names that are chose by the inaugural crew that serves on it. The speed and maneuverability of frigates allows them to fly in close formation and operate as a team. When doing so they will maintain their individual names, though it is common but not required that they assume a flight name corresponding to their current objective. If giving chase to an escaping ship they may go as "Pursuit-1" or if defending an objective they will often go by something such as "Paradise Defense-1," higher numbers going out to multiple frigate groups serving the same role.

Hyperion Class Assault Frigate

The Hyperion assault frigate is quite possible one of, if not the most potent fighting vessel in the entire Terran arsenal. The forward weapons are extremely powerful even for a frigate and the added coverage of multiple turrets gives this ship a perfect mix of both offensive and defensive abilities to handle whatever comes its way.

Prometheus Class Support Frigate

While frigates and other capital ships have nearly unlimited range, their fighter support squadrons do not. It is not always possible for a carrier to be on station and in the event of the unthinkable, the destruction of a fleet carrier, it would leave the entire strike craft force with no combat ability due to lack of fuel. The Prometheus support frigate carries a large store of the plasma used by fighters and it is capable of generating more on its own for extended missions. For added measure it offers a high level of turret coverage to protect docking fighters.

Themis Class Defense Frigate

It is the sole job of the Themis defense frigate to ensure that fighter squadrons are unable to penetrate through to the core of the fleet and wreak havoc upon the large capital ships. The Themis employs the most advanced sensor technology available to the Terran military and it is capable of tracking upwards of 4000 individual signatures at any given time. An onboard AI works to sort this massive stream of information into useful data that can be used to target the large missile banks. After all it would be unwise to worry about a large cluster of space debris when a wing of bombers are on target for the flagship.

Lelantos Artillery Frigate

Using advanced jamming technology (raspberry) to make itself invisible to most sensors until it is within range, the Lelantos is one of the most devastating weapons that can be used against other capital ships. While it is still visible to the naked eye, the dark paint scheme used by the Lelantos makes it difficult to spot which is a problem to both friend and foe as there have been many close calls with fighters nearly crashing into them during combat. Large boosters have been equipped to the Lelantos as well which allows them to make a quick getaway once their slow-firing weapons have been used for a single salvo against a target.
